The number of Canadians caring for older adults is staggering and on the rise. In fact, Canadian statistics report that nearly half of Canadian adults say they likely will be responsible for caring for an aging parent or another elderly family member at some point in their lives.
Could this someone be you? Many may find themselves in the role of caregiver to an adult suddenly and unexpectedly. No one knows this to be more true than founder and CEO Sheona Kloostra, a registered nurse who spent many years in the local emergency department caring for families and their seniors who had a life altering event.
All it takes is one telephone call that your mother has fallen or your father has had his driving license revoked or perhaps it’s your grandmother who is losing her memory and was found wandering in the middle of the night. Suddenly the senior is no longer safe at home.
Happy at Home Support Services was founded by Sheona Kloostra, a Registered Nurse.
Happy at Home support services was Incorporated in the summer of 2007. As both a mother of two small children and the daughter of a parent who was developing age-related illnesses. Sheona knew all too well the need for a registered nurse managed homecare agency in her local community. Armed with a cell phone and a laptop and six caregivers, Sheona stepped away from emergency nursing and created a company where people could turn to as a resource for education, healthcare navigation, senior advocation and reliable service based on personal one-on-one care that makes such a difference in a family.
Sheona understands from her personal and professional experience, how the health of a loved one affects every family member often extending two or three generations. She knows how the stress of family caregiving can affect every element of life. She knows what it feels like to be at a complete loss and not know what to do next, where to turn, or how to get help. Happy at home was created out of one RN’s desire to help families solve these problems.
Happy at Home caregivers provide that extra assistance that help keep seniors independent longer such as companionship, personal care, medication management, meal preparation, housekeeping, incidental transportation, and accompaniment to social events.
We are proud to serve as a resource for families, providing a wealth of information on topics of interest to family caregivers such as nutrition, senior safety in the home, palliative care and Alzheimer’s care.
