NOVEMBER 2018 - OBWA NETWORKING AND DINNER MEETING
The Orillia Business Women’s Association (OBWA) meets every second Wednesday of the Month (September thru June) at the Best Western Mariposa INN and Conference Centre at 400 Memorial Ave. Orillia for networking events, fun and delicious food.
OBWA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
All our dinners are special but in November we always remember to “remember” and we celebrate our freedoms in the spirit of Remembrance Day. This month we will have a guest speaker from the Heart & Stroke Foundation. It is a good time to have a speaker who can give us invaluable information on how we can keep ourselves healthier. I want to thank you for taking the time to submit your comments last month. It really helps us, the executive, run the meetings better when we hear from you with your concerns or positive words. Our December dinner meeting is our Christmas party and as we get closer to the event we will tell you more. I can tell you that it is always FUN! Our January dinner meeting is going to be replaced with a business showcase where you will be able to have your own table to display your products/services. The objective of this is to give members a better sense of who you are and what you have to offer AND to help generate business for everyone. If you are interested in having a table at this event, please let us know. It was very well received last year. Again just a reminder that paid members are more than welcome to and encouraged to share their businesses, products, events, etc. on the OBWA face book group. We encourage all of you, whenever you can, to bring guests to the dinner meetings and make this part of your commitment to the group. So, with all that being said, exciting things are continuing to happen! Remember to get your dinner reservation in before the cut-off date and I will see you November 14. In closing, here are some powerful words from Padre Dennis O’Brien, U.S. Marine Corps, “It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag.”
Yours in friendship and business,
Shelle Hossack
OBWA PRESIDENT
We are pleased to announce the guest speaker for November:
Topic:
Heart & Stroke Foundation 2018 Heart Report, Ms. Understood,
which identifies that women are
under-researched, under-diagnosed and over-dying.
Heart disease and stroke are the #1 cause
of premature death among Canadian women.
Find out what the Heart & Stroke Foundation is doing to close this gap, and what you can do to protect your own health, including knowing the signs of a stroke or heart attack and how these may be different for women, as well as knowing what your own risk factors are.
Trudy joined the Heart & Stroke Foundation in 2017, and is the Manager, Community Fundraising of the Barrie office. She has been working with not-for-profit organizations for almost 20 years, including six with the Starlight Children’s Foundation as the Associate Director of Children’s Services. In addition to her passion for making a difference in the community, Trudy is an avid photographer, and for the past eight years has made an annual spring trek to the US midwest to photograph tornadoes and supercell thunderstorms.
