• Early detection and treatment is essential to reduce the spread of EAB because other insects or diseases may look similar
• If caught early, prevention of the Emerald Ash Borer is possible with the use of the systemic insecticide, IMA-jet® (imidacloprid), which is inserted into the tree
• Barry and members of his staff have been approved and trained in the use of  IMA-jet® (imidacloprid)
• IMA-jet® (imidacloprid) is approved for use by Natural Resources Canada.
• Treatment must be done yearly as long as the Emerald Ash Borer is in the area
• Dark metallic green beetle native to Asia
• Highly destructive - Invasive species with few natural enemies
• They are 3 mm wide and 7 or 8 mm long and able to fly up to several kilometres
• The adult female EAB beetle has a 2 month life span
• She will lay approximately 100 creamy, white eggs under the bark or in crevices on the trunks and major branches of ash trees
• Eggs turn amber in colour and hatch in 2 weeks
• The larvae, the most destructive stage, bore through the bark to the outer layer of new sapwood where they feed until fall on the conductive tissue which carries nutrients and water to the leaves and the tree begins to die.
• The larvae will excavate chambers in the sapwood and outer bark where they overwinter.  
• There can be hundreds or even thousands of larvae in an infested tree.
• In spring, they develop into pupae and then to adult beetles which chew 3.5 – 4 mm wide D shaped exit holes through the bark.
• The adult feeds on the ash leaf and cuts notches on the sides of the leaf.
• Adults may be seen from June to the end of August on or near your ash trees.   
• The first noticeable sign of the death of the tree is usually in the thinning of the crown of the tree which may appear ragged with a diminished density of leaves.
• Indications are D shaped exit holes or S-shaped galleries under the bark filled with fine sawdust or  vertical splits in the bark or long shoots growing from the trunk or branches
• Woodpeckers and some species of squirrels feed on the larvae.
• Simcoe County regulated area - cannot move wood into or out of the area to prevent spread Yearly as long as is in area

WHAT IS AN EMERALD ASH BORER?  

• Emerald Ash Borer is a highly destructive invasive pest that arrived from Asia, most likely in untreated ash wood used for packing material.
• In North America, EAB was first detected in Windsor, ON, and Detroit, MI (2002).
• EAB was likely present in these areas for several years prior to discovery.
• The rapid spread of EAB has been hastened by the inadvertent human transport of beetle-contaminated firewood and other infested ash materials.
• EAB beetles:
  • metallic green in color
  • about 1/2 inch long and a 1/8 inch wide
  • body is narrow and elongated, and the head is flat
  • eyes are kidney-shaped and usually black.
  • feed on leaves and lay eggs from June to August
• EAB larvae:
  • white and flat, with distinctive bell-shaped segments
  • grow up to 1 inch long
  • feed on the inner bark, cutting off water and nutrient flow
• EAB attacks all species of True Ash (Fraxinus spp.) found in North America.
• EAB kills True Ash of any size or age, even healthy trees.
• EAB does not attack or kill Mountain Ash.
